We Can Do Hard Things!

Hi there!

Welcome back to the MoodiNews. Every Thursday, we discuss a variety of matters related to mental health and self-improvement.

I’m so glad you’re here.

Today, we will be continuing our current series on: THERAPEUTIC ONE-LINERS! YAY!

The phrase that we will be reviewing today is: We can do hard things.

I’ve talked previously about this one-liner in a past post, but I’m bringing it up again today because it’s so essential!

We can do hard things is a statement that I first heard from author Glennon Doyle, in her book Untamed.

Since then, I’ve seen it floating around on the Internet and I’m not sure where it originated.

Regardless, the one-liner, We can do hard things, is a natural extension of the phrase that we discussed last weekLife is work.

When life gets tough, we need a reminder that we can handle it.

Obviously, when things get ‘hard,’ life is not fun.

And, a lot of times, people will stop working (i.e., living!) when things get hard… because ‘hard’ sucks!

That’s where the one-liner, We can do hard things, comes in!

We don’t need to enjoy misery, it just is what it is…

Still, there comes a time where we must persist (literally fight for the life we want!), despite hardship—especially in the early stages of mental health recovery or personal transformation.

Therefore, sometimes when ‘hard’ happens, we cannot, for the sake of ourselves or our situation, quit.

The phrase, We can do hard things, thus reminds us to keep pressing on in those moments—even when we want to throw in the towel.

Maybe right now you’re going through it.

If so, that’s okay… so am I (hello, burnout!), and so are many other people just like us.

Nobody likes to admit when their chips are down, but let me normalize, as a therapist, that ‘hard’ is everywhere!

Human struggle is rampant, and probably always will be—and it’s important to remember that you are not alone in your struggle, even if the work in front of you is solely yours to complete.

So, whether it’s you who needs to hear this, or someone else in your life, just remember today’s one-liner, WE CAN DO HARD THINGS!

(For example, you can practice repeating this phrase as a mantra to help alleviate anxiety or sustain your motivation whenever you need an emotional boost!)

There are lots of little gems hidden along the tumultuous trail of life. Sometimes we have to do some serious digging to find them… but they are there.

So, continue to fight for yourself and the things that matter most to you, even when it feels ‘hard’ to do so.

It often pays when we finally find a way to push through difficulty—so persist if needed, and be good to you.

Remember—You can do hard things!
